I'm thinking that you could just install a Woodcraft keyless ignition, and leave the ignition assembly in place. I have the Woodcraft, it's plug and play.

As mentioned by MadMel, you can use the woodcraft unit to start the bike. The locking mechanism is purely mechanical so you have a choice. Either leave the one that's on there now and zip tie the cables so they are out of the way(but still appear to function to the casual onlooker), or purchase another ignition unit with a key and remove the harness so you can go back to OEM if desired.
